Richard Mort · Japan–Europe

English that does justice to the original.

A translation needs to say what you mean in English that makes sense to its reader. I translate, edit and write business material, drawing on years of work with Japanese and European clients.

Discuss a translation or editing job

Understand the material before rewriting it

A product page, a technical report and a president's message do different jobs. I want to understand the subject, the intended reader and the terms that must remain consistent before deciding what the English should sound like.

Where a reference file or established terminology exists, that is part of the brief. I can work alongside a client's translation team or take responsibility for the agreed English text.

A substantial body of language work

My published translation work includes a technical textbook on timber engineering of more than 600 pages, translated from German into English. Other assignments have involved technical material, corporate communications, website copy and editing for Japanese clients.

I also write directly in English. Sometimes that is the better route: interview the person who knows the subject, check the supporting material and build the text for its audience.

Send the text and the purpose

Tell me the source language, approximate length, subject, intended use and deadline. Include any reference material you can share. I will confirm whether the assignment fits my experience and agree a fee before starting.

Scope and costs before you book

Before paid work starts, I'll put the scope in writing: what you'll receive, the language, deadline, fee and who will do each part. The quote identifies any travel, event admission and partner costs, along with any applicable taxes. I start the agreed work once we've settled the brief and you've paid the 50% advance. We'll agree any additional work separately. Prices are in euros.
